10:30 am - We will never surrender

And we will hunt you all down one by one, you ugly bastards.

Sweet revenge time. Now.

Июн. 17, 2005

10:58 pm - Читая прессу...

05:30 pm - Thanks, America

This is what the whole world should have been saying all along (Paul Edwards from Australia, via Little Green Footballs):

"Where do I start? I’ve wanted to say this for a long time. It is unbelievable that America gets badmouthed all the time. America has helped the cause of freedom more than anyone else. First of all I’d like to thank America for saving Australia’s butt at the Battle of the Coral Sea in WWII. This prevented the Japanese from landing here, and bringing with them the concept of “comfort women”. I think Australia’s nature is such that we would have sacrificed 90% of our population rather than hand over any woman. America’s intervention meant that we were never required to make that terrible choice. Thanks America!

Then of course there’s the fact that you saved Europe’s butt, not once but 3 times - WWI, WWII and the Cold War. I don’t know why we don’t hear more thanks from Europe for this. But in the absence of thanks from ungrateful recipients of American largesse, let me say it instead - thanks America!

And then there’s all the foreign aid you give. And all the technology you provide. And all the knowledge that is provided for free. And the Mars rover images, also provided for free. And the GPS system also provided for free. Why don’t the third world countries thank you for all the stuff they receive from America? I don’t know. But let me thank you instead. Thanks America!

And something that is far more important than foreign aid is the security umbrella you provide, that the entire free world lives under. If there was any justice in the world, the rest of the free world would provide money to fund the American military, and hand over a cheque with a BIG SMILE. Instead, what do we see? Protests in places like South Korea. Unbelievable. How you can put up with the South Koreans is beyond me. The fact that you do put up with them, with a smile, exemplifies the inner beauty of the American soul. Thanks America!

And then there’s the fact that after defeating an enemy, instead of rubbing his nose in the dirt, you instead show great magnimity and help him to his feet, immediately, ala Germany and Japan. You show that the best way to defeat an enemy is to turn him into a friend. You teach that we should judge people by their current behaviour, not past bad behaviour. If only the rest of the world could learn from America. But instead most of the rest of the world maintains grudges for centuries, transferring guilt to perfectly innocent people, and pretending to inherit suffering and permanent victimhood. If only people would adopt the American way, the world would be so much better. What can I say? Nothing. I am humbled in the face of American largesse. Thanks America!"

09:49 am - No more money to Amnesty

The bastards compare Guantanamo Bay to the Soviet Gulag.

Those ignoramuses hardly have any idea about what the Gulag was.

Not a single bloody cent / penny / whatever.

06:26 pm - European civilisation has sown the seeds of its own decline and fall

Such is the title of an article by Gerard Baker in today's Times.

This is really depressing reading. But Baker just gets better and better.

Some best quotes:

"These twin threats — the economic challenge of fiercely competitive globalisation and a political challenge to the culturally deracinated, splintering societies — are driving Europe into debilitating turmoil."

"In their different ways, the two referendums were surely symbolic events, marking the culmination of a decade or more of European disintegration and decline."

"Instead of focusing on what was needed – American and British-style labour reforms, tax cuts and deregulation — Europe embarked on a quixotic exercise. It sought to weld a dozen or more disparate countries into an unbreakable economic union, all settled snug and warm under the fraying comfort blanket of expensive welfare systems."

"Europe ... owed its years of peace not to some solemn intra-European comity but to the hard steel of US firepower, primed to defend Europe from the Soviet Union.
...
When its American ally was attacked in September 2001, Europe gamely offered to reciprocate for US protection in the Cold War, but most European nations lacked the military resources to turn that promise into anything more than tokens.

Then in Iraq in 2003, confronted with a tyrant who had repeatedly thumbed his nose at the international system that Europe supposedly revered, it instinctively recoiled, and a softened-up intellectual elite turned on the Americans instead."

My feelings exactly.

Read it all.

10:41 am - Essential reading

It seems that the majority of members of the europeanunion community have a very one-sided worldview.

To help balancing this, I would like to suggest some other sources of information / opinion.

Here is a quick selection:

Times London (esp opinion section)
Telegraph London (esp opinion section)
National Review
WSJ Opinion Journal
Front Page
Jerusalem Post

Blogs:

Instapundit

Columnists:
Victor Davis Hanson
David Warren
Charles Krauthammer
Mark Steyn
Michael Ledeen

Happy reading.

07:24 pm - Why the EU is not such a good idea, after all...

Many people are quite surprised to see a negative attitude towards the EU, and keep asking for explanations.

To satisfy the curiosity, here is an off-the-cuff (and far from being complete) list of what is wrong about the Union:

- Pathological anti-Americanism
- Appeasement of dictatorships (e.g., Cuba, Iran and North Korea)
- Hostility to democratic Israel defending itself against agressive Arab neighbours
- Support of Arab despotic regimes and terrorist groups
- Intention to lift the China arms embargo, while China openly threatens democratic Taiwan
- Irresponsible immigration policy
- Disregard of the real source of Europe's unity - its Christian roots
- Undermining European Christian values by the invitation for the Muslim Turkey to join the EU
- Multiculturalist illusion based on the premise that all cultures are equal and equally tolerant to each other
- Usurpation of power from nation states
- Widespread corruption, secrecy, fraud and waste
- Very little accountability

It must be said that it is very difficult to find a single positive thing about the EU which could not have been achieved by simple intergovernmental cooperation (i.e., without the political union).

It would be very nice to see a complementary list from the EU supporters.

08:40 pm - EU: The endgame

According to the exit poll, the Dutch have rejected the euro-constitution by 63% to 37%.

The French / Dutch double blow to the ugly socialist project is the vox populi the arrogant euro-elite have been successfully pretending not to hear for a very long time.

This is the beginning of the end of the EU in its current form.

05:24 pm - Post-election Britain: A view from the US

Chimps, the Cheshire Cat & the Fall of Tony Blair - Andrew Stuttaford in National Review

A couple of best quotes:

"They (Labour activists), poor souls, remain trapped in a mindset that blends traditional working class belligerence with the idiot radicalism of a third-rate provincial university."

"Labor is once again dependent on its traditional heartlands, the industrial north, and those grim socialist satrapies better known as Scotland and Wales, territories where Blair’s message has very limited intellectual, emotional, or electoral appeal."

Marvellous. Read it all.

"Without hurting the Arab world, it must be established that their agreements, declarations, and speeches are not worth the paper they were printed on" - Sharon, as quoted by Yediot Aharonot.

10:21 am - The EU idiocy of the day

Eurovision harmony dies a death - from today's Telegraph:

"At the Theresienstadt (or Terezin) concentration camp in Poland, Sweden's European Commissioner, Margot Wallstrom, declared: 'There are those who want to scrap the supranational idea. They want the European Union to go back to the old purely inter-governmental way of doing things. I say those people should come to Terezin and see where that old road leads.'"

This is simply unbelievable. Or may be not; it is neither the first nor the last time that the unelected EU bureaucrats make such lunatic statements.

And Mark Steyn is sarcastic as usual:

"Why does so much of the continental governing class carry on like the sinister Mitteleuropean shrink from a 1940s melodrama, insisting that you're far too unstable to be allowed to leave the sanatorium? Well, either they're the loopy ones or they're desperate, and they'd rather talk about a new Holocaust than any of the more pressing questions - Turkey, the unsustainable euro, unemployment, over-regulation, deathbed demographics. Or maybe they talk about the Second World War because that's the only genuine pan-European topic."

Read it all.

04:42 pm - Iran next?

Defiant Iran plans nuclear revival - The Guardian (via Watch - Covering the War on Terror)

Bunker-busting bombs ready?

This seems to be the only remaining option, as the internal revolt, the only viable alternative, is becoming more and more improbable.

The Mad Mullahs need to be taught a lesson.

(MEMRI TV, via Little Green Footballs).

"All over Europe, clueless politicians will remain in power simply because their opposition is even more clueless than they are."

Европейский антиамериканизм:

"One of the reasons for the persistence of anti-Americanism in Europe is not the relative success of the Bush administration or even the war in Iraq. It’s the absolute absence of any interesting political idea at all. In France and Germany especially, things are so bad that anti-Americanism is the only card to play."

Германская безработица:

"Unemployment is now so rife in Germany that by summer’s end trying to explain away failed social and economic policies will be the only full-time job left in the country... If Turkey ever enters the EU, maybe Germans can find some work there."

Выборы в Великобритании:

"British education reform will start with Michael Howard, who very likely will learn in a few days that to win an election, you actually have to have a positive idea of your own."

"Gordon Brown can continue the hard work of making Britain into a bland isle of politically correct excess, where binge drinking and obscene language is mistaken for dissent."

Европе полезно было бы хотя бы иногда почитывать издания типа National Review. Да вряд ли это случится...
